CTS History

The vision of a Bible Seminary was in the heart of Dr. Tissa Weerasingha since 1968.  In 1973, however, after returning from USA, he began to pastor Calvary Church, Kirulapone, and the time was not yet ripe for this project.

By 1981, Calvary had grown considerably and the new facility of Calvary Church was built.  It was in 1983, during a period of fasting and prayer that the Lord reconfirmed in his heart that the ‘fullness of time’ had come to launch the Bible School.

Calvary Bible School, as it was then known, was started in September 1983.  Most of the pastors and workers who serve today in the Calvary Complex of Churches have been trained at this school.  In total, 936 people have followed courses or completed programs at Calvary Theological Seminary.

The foundation of CTS is the Great Commission, and although the primary focus is on training Church planters, students are trained for other areas of ministry as well.  The first extension school was started in 1998, and today, there are 11 extension schools.  Currently, the enrolment stands at 245 representing 4 different denominations.

In 2002, Calvary Theological Seminary moved into the newly built facility, with a larger and well equipped library.

Calvary Theological Seminary and its extension centers are 100% locally funded, and some of the equipment used in the classrooms of the new facility were paid for by faith pledges made by the current students.
